Creating a framed border around an image [html]

This is what the final result will look like:

Create a new document, make it probably the size of your render or signature that you want to be bordered. Alternatively, if you're just interested in the effect, make it any size.

Select the Polygonal Lasso Tool from your tools bar.

Make sure your shift key is held down, and draw out a selection like this:

Click select > inverse.

You should have a selection similar to this:

Create a new layer (click layer > new > layer)

Keeping your area selected, in the inversed selection, paste a black, solid colour.

Now we're going off on a slight tangent. We're done with the border, and the rest of the tutorial will be effects to make border similar to the opening picture. So, create this new document: 3x3 pixels. What we're going to do, is make a pattern, that we will overlay onto the border to give it texture and depth.

Fill in the 9 pixels with colours similar to this, and the identical shape.

Now click edit > define pattern, and name your pattern

We're done with that pattern for now, so head over to your layers window, and either double-click on your border layer, or right click, and select blending options.

The next few images are pretty self explanatory. Just make sure you have the correct style selected on the left, and then just adjust the properties on the right. Just remember the 5 styles we are applying: Drop Shadow, Bevel and Emboss, Gradient Overlay, Pattern Overlay, and Stroke.

This is where you are using your pattern you created earleir. Just select it by clicking on the default pattern and selecting your own.

Once all those effects are applied, you can go ahead and insert your render or signature. To do this, all you have to do is select your border layer, click in the middle, and then open your signature or render, copy it, and then select 'paste into'. It should adjust, and you can always move it around inside your border.

End of tutorial. Hope you enjoyed/learnt from it.
